NFL Franchise Tag values

via Karen Guregian, in millions:

$ 10.7 Quarterback
$ 9.5 Cornerback
$ 8.8 Defensive end
$ 8.1 Linebacker
$ 7.8 Wide receiver
$ 7.5 Offensive line
$ 6.5 Running back
$ 6.3 Defensive tackle
$ 4.5 Tight end
$ 4.4 Safety
$ 2.5 Kicker

The Patriots are mulling a tag on Randy Moss, since they can't tag Asante Samuel again. The tag is usually used for one of the best players on the team, who becomes a free agent and projects to have another strong season. Reacting to a tag may be the biggest test Moss has faced all year.

The relative values for the tags reflect the average of the top 5 salaries for each position. Cornerback values have been climbing over the years, accurately reflecting scarcity for top players in that role. I believe that passing has increased over the last few seasons as well.

Running backs are still critical, but a lot of them tend to see their most productive years while playing under rookie contracts, and have a shorter shelf life because of the number of hits they take and the size of the defensive players hitting them.
