America gets fatter

Numbers posted by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of Americans are obese, compared to 32.7 percent who are overweight. It said just under 6 percent are "extremely" obese.
My BMI is trading around 22. I credit hitting the gym, more at breakfast, less at dinner, and eschewing snacks and red meat 6 days per week.

BMI is somewhat of a flawed metric as it does not consider muscle vs. body fat for an individual. It is useful for aggregate measures like the one cited above, in using average body fat for the sample.
